Bulleit Bourbon is a brand of Kentucky Straight Bourbon whiskey characterized by its relatively high rye content for a bourbon and its aging of at least six years. The design of the bottle is reminiscent of an old-fashioned brown medicine flask with raised lettering and is sealed by a cork stopper. The Bulleit brand is owned by Diageo, and it is produced at the Kirin Brewing Company Four Roses Distillery in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. It is bottled at 45% abv for the US market. For the UK, German and Australia markets, it is bottled in the UK at 40% abv.
According to Tom Bulleit, who created the modern brand, the first batch of Bulleit bourbon was made in 1830 by Augustus Bulleit, who continued to produce it during the 19th century, but its production was discontinued after his death.
In 1987, Tom Bulleit, the great-great-grandson of the original creator, created the first modern-day batch, which was introduced to US markets in 1999, and to Australia, UK and Germany in 2000. In characterizing the recipe, Tom Bulleit has remarked on its relatively high rye content, its relatively lengthy aging, and has said that the bourbon has an absence of phenol.
In 1997 the Bulleit brand name was bought by Seagram, and began being distilled in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. Following an acquisition of various Seagram's assets, the Bulleit brand is now owned by Diageo and is produced at the Kirin Brewing Company Four Roses Distillery in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky.
